OLLI-USF Friday Lecture Series
|
| Description: |
Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at USF presents "Mythic Life of Charlotte Brontë" as part of its Friday Lecture Series. Mrs. Gaskell, who published a biography of Charlotte Bronte two years after her death, pictured her as a lonely woman and a long-suffering victim of duty, subordinating her career as a writer to the demands of her selfish and autocratic father – the obedient daughter and sister. Others saw her as a real life Jane Eyre, who was a romantic spirit longing for adventure – a soul seeking self-fulfillment. What truths are there in those two divergent views?
William Scheuerle, PhD, Victorian Literature, Syracuse University, is Professor Emeritus and Dean Emeritus, USF. He recently served as Director of the Humanities Institute, College of Arts and Sciences, USF.
